Beccles 1 - 5 Norwich City 5s (05/10/24)
This was a game of two halves. Although Beccles did not trouble Norwich City for the first 15 minutes, they certainly made up for it for the rest of the first half, which I think surprised the opposition. Beccles played very well and created many opportunities, getting in the D on several occasions, but unable to get a clear shot at goal as the visitors defended extremely well. Beccles also defended very well and kept the opposition at bay they until an awkward bounce sent the ball passed the defenders to put City 1-0 up after 26 minutes. Both teams had a squad of 14 so plenty of subbing, and changing of players positions to accommodate this. Marie and Jodie were fully involved and did a great job in a challenging game. City often took up the W position and always seemed to have a player spare. Hannah Devine at right mid also often had to cope with trying to mark 2 players and she worked really hard putting everything into it. Mandy Kirby hopefully by now has realised what an asset she is to the team, successfully defending many attacks. However, City really stepped up in the second half and scored two goals in quick succession making it 3-0 after 9 minutes. Undeterred, Beccles battled on and after Tarnya had 2 strong attempts on goal, the ball fell to the well positioned Ellie Kirby and she slotted it home. Norwich increased their lead in the 23rd and 34th minute of the game, making the final score 1-5. Beccles were disappointed to have conceded 5 goals but they must remember that they gained promotion last year and division 4 (North) will be tougher and it is still early in the season.
After a mix up with the availability of the tea venue, the teams enjoyed an unexpected picnic on the grass in the sunshine including hot tea. Many thanks to the hirers of the hall allowing us to access the kitchen.
