This was a cracking match, with Beccles playing extremely well against a well organised young Dereham side, who had come down from the premier division last season. With players volunteering to play in different positions, and two new players, Beccles gave it their all and held Dereham for 27 minutes before Dereham counter attacked and only had the keeper to beat to take the lead. A very well taken goal shortly afterwards, meant Dereham were 2-0 up at half time. Following the addition of new players Emma Taylor and Gemma Powell, Beccles were able to field just 10 players against Dereham’ s
young squad of 13, after being forced to concede the previous week’s game due to lack of uninjured players. Sara Grant, playing for only the second time in goal, did an excellent job despite her injury and Debbie Mann switched to left mid to also put in a good performance. The second half was always going to be tougher as the Beccles players tired, but still continued to push forward. Ruth Swann had an excellent game at centre back, and sent some lovely long balls up the field through the surrounding Dereham players. Mandy Kirby and Carole Rake were solid in defence assisted by Gemma Powell who had not played for a number of years, slotting in well into the sweeper position. Katharine Holmes and Felicity Turner playing up front, and Emma Taylor, pressurised the Dereham defence at every opportunity, but couldn’t quite make it through the strong defence. Claire Clarke who only joined this season and regularly switches positions, was constantly running about supporting both the forwards and defence. Beccles may have lost the game 6-0 with the final two goals being scored in the last 3 minutes, however Beccles did not make it easy for Dereham as everyone worked really hard, and despite the rain, it was a good enjoyable game.
