Beccles continued their unbeaten record in the Empresa Norfolk Hockey League, with their 3rd consecutive win, this time against newly promoted Herlings. This is such a fantastic start to the season, achieved with commitment, team spirit with everyone focussed and developing well as a team. Herlings started with fielding 11 outfield players for approximately the first 15 minutes of the game, and it was in this period that Beccles opened the scoring in open play through Katharine Holmes. Just as Beccles were awarded their first penalty corner, play was stopped to enable the Herling goalkeeper to take up her position. Beccles had plenty of short corners and the majority of the possession in the first half, but with Herling’s defending well. Beccles increased their lead following a shot on goal when Katharine Holmes got herself in front of the keeper and connected well with the ball to put Beccles 2-0 up. Before half time Beccles increased their lead when following lots of action, Anya Clarke battled hard and slotted the ball home making it 3-0 at half time. Herlings were very good at taking quick free hits, and it was on one of these occasions that resulted in a well-executed goal for the visitors. Beccles held on to their lead despite Herlings pressurising the defence towards the last quarter of the game, and took a well-deserved 3 points.
If you enjoy playing hockey or have never played but want to give it a go, Beccles have a relaxed training session on Sunday 13th October at Beccles Sports Centre (The Venue) Ringsfield Road, Beccles at 9.00am to 10.00am, so why not give Beccles a try – see our Facebook page for up to date info.
