After last week’s excellent result, Beccles were at home to lower placed UEA 3‘s this week in what was a very hard fought match. For the first 20 minutes or so, Beccles had the majority of the possession, but they could not infiltrate the masses of defenders UEA put in their way. Being considerably younger than the majority of the Beccles team UEA seemed to be everywhere as they clustered together giving the home team very little room to manoeuvre. Sarah Webster and Hannah Eaton worked tirelessly throughout the game and Sarah put through several hard balls into the D for the forwards, but they could not capitalise on this.
With 7 minutes of the first half remaining, UEA broke into the Beccles half and the Beccles defenders who had not had that much to do, were unable to prevent UEA from scoring and taking the lead at half time. With a squad of 13 this week, Beccles tried a different tactic after the break in an attempt to increase their domination of the midfield. Not long into the 2nd half, an excellent ball from Ruth Swann found Debbie Mann who lifted the ball over the defenders stick to the waiting Hannah Eaton, who levelled the score. Amy Thornton also did some excellent tackling and running with the ball, as she adapted to a midfield role this week.
Debbie Mann put Beccles ahead late into the 2nd half after a deflected shot from Hannah Eaton fell to Mann who cracked the ball passed the keeper. Unfortunately with only 3 minutes remaining, UEA took advantage of a penalty corner and although the first strike was saved, Beccles gave the visitors a clear path for the follow up shot towards the corner of the goal, where it was pounced on by another UEA player to level the score. Beccles had one more chance to re take the lead, but they could not convert the final penalty corner of the game, and the points were shared.
