On a cold Saturday morning in May Sam ‘Clacko’ Claxton and I (Becky ‘Fluffster’ Clough) intrepidly set off to take part in the Cancer Research’s 5k Pretty Mudder – Race for life at the Norfolk showground. There we were joined by a couple of members of the Beccles Ladies hockey team Amy ‘Kickers’ Thornton and Maxine ‘Mad Max’ Gibbs. We donned our very smart very pink GGOWL ‘Beccles Birds’ team shirts and we were ready to go.
Our main aim leading up to the day was to raise as much money as possible for a fantastic cause. But as we arrived everything was strangely quiet, we could see a number of participates running around the course but they all looked disappointingly clean…….. we were now on a mission to get as muddy as possible!!
We were taken through a brief warm up session before we started, consisting of a lot of jumping jacks. Quite frankly by this stage my legs were already shot, never the less we assembled on the start line with enthusiasm.
The Beccles Birds all set off at a brisk pace but this was soon tempered by the first obstacle a series of inflatable hurdles, little did we know this was just the start. Far more running was required than we anticipated, coupled with crawling our way under muddy cargo nets and through tunnels, our muddy goal was on track.
The space hopper race proved somewhat tricky and sporting freshly bruised cyoccxs, we tackled the remaining obstacles most of which involved a vast amount of mud and water. Culminating in a large inflatable slide ending in a large muddy pool, one final mud fight and we sprinted across the finish line.
I think we succeed in our mission to get muddyand of course raise money and awareness for Cancer Research, however we always strive to do better!! The Beccles Birds are now in search of our next mudder challenge for charity
