Beccles were pleasantly surprised to be 2 -0 up after only 3 minutes in this crucial division 2 Empresa Norfolk league game, after having suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Yarmouth back in November 2015. Whether this was a different team from the one that turned out earlier in the season is not possible to tell, but Beccles certainly dominated this game. Jodie Sharp was instrumental in both the initial two goals, scoring the first, and then successfully setting up the second one for Vicki Goddard to deflect the ball through the keeper’s legs, at the far post.
Jodie had an excellent game at centre mid, skilfully meandering her way past the opposition displaying great stick work and determination, verbally encouraged by her young son Noah. When called upon, the Beccles defence kept the opposition at bay, preventing Yarmouth from creating scoring opportunities, with the Beccles keeper not touching the ball throughout the whole match.
Half way through the second half, Max Gibbs scored from a penalty corner with a well taken hard strike. Two further goals came in the first half, one from Debbie Mann and then Sharp’s second goal.
The second half saw Beccles keep the pressure up, but Yarmouth defended well with their keeper making a couple of vital saves. Beccles hit several long balls into the D for the forwards to get on the end of, and the versatile Hannah Roberts, well positioned near the post, was unlucky to not quite make enough contact on the ball, having switched positions from defender to forward, for the last quarter.
Both teams continued to battle it out to the end, but with no goals in the second half, the final score remained 5-0. With 2 more games left, Beccles are still on course to continue their second place promotion chances. This week Beccles are at home to North Norfolk 2’s 10.30am start.
