This was a very hard fought, entertaining game as two fairly equal teams battled it out throughout the full 70 minutes. Beccles currently in 3rd position with games in hand, travelled to Goal in Norwich to take on leaders Dragons, who had narrowly beaten them 3-2 in their previous encounter.
This Dragons team had already won division 2 of the Empresa Norfolk league before the start of this match, but this did not in any way affect how their played. They came out strong and for a good part of the first half, dominated the midfield area with their well drilled passing and manoeuvring off the ball. However, despite this, they were thwarted by the Beccles defence, every time they attacked.
The eleven Beccles players, put everything into this game, and this week, it went a lot better for them. Amy Thornton and Sarah Webster were strong in defence, with Sarah switching from midfield to defence, she still pushed forward with the ball, and ran at the opposition as she turned defence into attack. Dragons marked particularly tightly, given the Beccles players little room to move and making it difficult to get the ball to their team mates. Hannah Roberts, who is frequently accommodating when asked to play in any position she is given, moved from defence to right attack, and did a very good, making space and marking the opposition.
The supporters from both sides remarked on what a good game it was to watch, and it was good to play a game of hockey in a friendly environment. This result still leaves Beccles 3rd in the table, and with them needing to win their remaining 3 games against the top half teams if they are to gain promotion to division 1 next season, is a massive, but achievable task. The first of these crucial games is at Hobart, Loddon against Yarmouth 2nds, 12pm start.
