Beccles drop down to 3rd place in division 2 of Norfolk Empresa league after losing away at Gorleston to the one goal. Whether the defeat was the way the opposition played, how Beccles played, or the fact that for the first time this season, Beccles had a squad of 13 players, is hard to tell. They was some switching of positions to accommodate everybody getting part of a game, but this has been done before and the team has still had a positive result. Yarmouth tended to play schoolgirl hockey, with the team often following where the ball went, making it difficult for Beccles to get the ball away and into space. Yarmouth were quick to tackle and take free hits while Beccles seemed a bit below par this week, having only played once in the last 3 weeks. Luck was certainly not on their side either, with Charlie Calladine hit the post in the first half, after both her and Vicki Goddard had tried to scramble to ball over the goal line. Max Gibbs could not break the deadlock either this week as she stepped up to receive 3 of the penalty corner passes, but even she was not able to penetrate the solid Yarmouth defence on this occasion. Amy Thornton showed her skills as she frequently successfully weaved her way past the opposition before releasing the ball into the D to create scoring opportunities. Neither keeper was kept that busy but there were some scary moments for both teams. Eventually Yarmouth managed to break through after a scramble in the D. This was only 13 minutes into the second half, so Beccles had time to even the score, but Yarmouth marked well, were younger and quicker and did not allow Beccles to play their usual game. However Beccles were not despondent and all had a thoroughly good time at Becky and Sam’s engagement party later that evening!
